Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest producer of TFT-LCD displays has developed a new LCD based panel that can detect X-Rays. Now medical labs don’t have to use old fashioned X-Ray films for diagnosis.

Samsung achieved this capability by transforming X-rays to digital signals and then to visible light through the use of TFT-LCDs. This means, with the help of this technology, X-ray images will be visible almost instantly for quick diagnosis than what would have normally required to process conventional X-ray films.

The flat panel X-ray detector (FPXD) has other uses other than in medial filed. For example, this technology would be of great use in security and industrial uses.

The FXPD has a dimension of almost similar of a 61cm widescreen LCD and produce the images of up to 9.4 Mega Pixels. (3072*3072 px)

Samsung expects to start production of this device in first quarter of 2008.
